"I want to give back to the Early Childhood Education community. We stand on the shoulders of giants… of passionate, caring people who worked tirelessly and who have made a difference in ECE and for the teachers, the care givers, and the child care directors over the years.
Alone, I may not be able to effect change, but in collaboration with others, I want to make a difference in Ohio. I want to be aware of the issues around the State of Ohio that affect the professionals and ultimately the children. If I am not involved, I become complacent. Early care and education professionals are too vital, too misunderstood, too taken for granted for me to do that. For that reason, I want to serve on the Ohio AEYC Board of Directors.
The most significant issue facing Ohio AEYC and its members is funding. It all comes down to funding, funding, funding! Teachers are leaving the field because they are not being paid as well as at less fulfilling yet less demanding jobs. Research-driven, high-quality ratios for SUTQ have been put aside. In Ohio, directors are having a hard time finding high-quality educated teachers of competition within the early childhood industry. I am very happy for teaching professionals who are finding jobs at much higher wages with better hours. I am just disheartened for the rest of the industry in this area. I do not see it getting any better. More and more directors have to spend significant hours each week in the classroom or resort to hiring less than high quality educators. Either way, the children lose."
